Jul 21,  · "Outa-Space" is a Funk/R&B instrumental recorded by Billy Preston that originally appeared on his A&M Records-debut album, "I Wrote a Simple Song".

Because of its spacy sound, he called the instrumental "Outa Space." Preston felt it was a hit, but A&M was leery and issued it as the B-side of "I Wrote a Simple Song." A radio DJ flipped the single over and began playing "Outa Space" and the track took off, selling more than a million copies and going to number one R&B and number two pop in.

"'70s Soul Gold" contains 36 mini-masterpieces of soul music with not a bad song in the bunch. I don't know for certain that 22 of these songs hit #1 on the charts, as the Editorial Review above claims, but they were all enormous radio hits in the s/5(6).
